Hi ,
Sunflowers are one of my favorite flowers, which we are seeing everywhere with the arrival of fall. I find them so cheerful, love the bright yellow colors, and the incredible height and strength of them. Seeing fields of sunflowers when visiting the Provence region of France two years ago brought me immense joy. One of the characteristics I love most about the sunflowers is how they turn
naturally toward the light. This process supports their impressive growth and vitality.
Many times, we too may instinctively feel like turning toward the light. As humans, that can be something that brings us joy and peace, and lifts our spirits. However, we often stop our Selves with feelings of guilt or selfishness if we “indulge” in activities or moments that bring us joy. Thoughts like “I don’t have time to do that,” “I should be doing x,” “This isn’t
responsible,” “This is silly,” and “It’s the middle of the day” get in the way, and block us from turning naturally toward our light.
Why is this so important? Because we as the beautiful, vulnerable humans that we are, like the sunflower, can only continue to grow and thrive when we allow our Selves to embrace what gives us light. Engaging in what nourishes our body, spirit and minds, and brings us joy and peace regularly, is essential for us to blossom fully.
The Way of the Sunflower
- Consider what embracing the way of the sunflower might look like for you? What activities, little things, experiences or daily rituals feel like sunshine to you? Specifically, what brings you joy, peace, and feels nourishing to you? Take a moment and write them down.
- Reflect on how often you are engaging in them now on a daily or weekly basis? If unclear, consider keeping a log for a week and recording what brings you joy, energy and nourishment each day. Notice what feelings and thoughts come up as you consider doing this log exercise. And what arises for you when you’re thinking about turning toward the light? Are there any feelings or thoughts that feel like
clouds getting in the way?
This week, consider placing what you’ve identified as the activities, moments, rituals, etc. that bring you joy and feel like sunshine in a visible location in your home. Then select one activity from this list, and give your Self permission to be like the sunflowers and turn toward the light. As you do something each day, notice the ripples of joy and a lightness in your step arise as the week goes on
